Treatments

A full case history is taken, to include previous veterinary issues, the level and type of work, saddle fitting, shoeing, dentistry as wells as details of the presenting symptoms.

Assessment includes observation of the horse moving, in hand or on the lunge and possibly under saddle. The horse will then be palpated, felt all over, to identify specific areas of pain and spasm.

McTimoney Equine Therapy

Adjustment of the Atlas.jpg McTimoney treatment of Animals was developed by the late John McTimoney in the 1950’s and involves gentle manipulation using chiropractic techniques. It is a non-invasive whole body therapy, which works to realign and balance the musculoskeletal system. Flexibility to the skeletal frame is restored by realigning misalignments in the spine and pelvis, and releasing associated muscle spasms.  For over 40 years McTimoney practioners have been helping animals with this powerful yet gentle technique.

Equine Sports Massage

Thoracic Adjustments 2.jpgSports massage was developed for sports, where anything less than maximum efficiency is considered a problem and the precursor to potentially serious injury.

Equine Sports Massage is very effective when used alongside McTimoney physical therapy. Sports massage for horses works on the soft tissues, helping to relieve muscle spasm and tension, improving flexability and suppleness and maintaining muscle tone.

Stress Point Therapy for Horses

Adjustment of the thoracic region of the back.jpg This is a deep tissue massage technique, which is able to target specific points of muscle spasm. It is a very effective technique at relieving tension and stiffness. Using this technique enables the therapist to identify and treat points of spasm in the muscle thus making it an ideal therapy for preventing the development of major problems from minor injuries. Its specificity also makes treatment highly effective in relieving more serious muscle strain.

Before any treatment can be undertaken it is important that veterinary permission is granted.

Aftercare

Pelvic Adjustment 1.jpgFull information is given, tailored to each individual horse; this can include schooling exercises, gentle massage techniques and stretching exercises.

See the section on Exercise Therapy for more information on how to help your horse in between treatments.

How many sessions are needed?

Depending on the type and severity of the problem, 2 – 3 sessions may be required. Regular checkups once or twice a year can prevent minor injuries from becoming major problems and can help maintain performance.
